A Man and His Church Brothers

Ephesians 6:10-20 (16-17), Romans 10:17 & Ephesians 5:22-33

With Pastor Steve doing a guest sermon at another church, Lee O’Brien spoke about the new Men’s Fraternity sessions that he will start leading at 9:30 on Sunday mornings, starting Aug. 12. He said the material is aimed at helping men learn to lead courageously and live for eternity. “Helping each other and (reaching) the lost is eternal,” Lee said. “Everything you own a hundred years from now will be dirt.”

The first class, which will run for 24 weeks, will review “A Man and His Marriage.” It will look at a man’s role in marriage and his commitment to God to serve his wife and four foundational truths: 1) marriage is God’s idea, 2) God intended for man to leave his home and cleave to his wife, 3) dying to self so we can live, 4) a husband’s biblical role.

Alternating every other Sunday, starting Aug. 19, will be “A Man and His Traps.” Traps like pride, passivity, lust and idols. Lee emphasized that if you’re a man and don’t have anyone to help you deal with life’s obstacles, you’ll wind up choosing these idols over God.

Starting early next year, Lee plans to go through “The Quest for Manhood.” He noted that there are only two ways to grow a church: prayer and discipleship. If we aren’t discipling each other, which is the goal of these studies (and the women’s group), then why would God send us people to be discipled. He concluded by noting that when you pursue Christ, the yoke is easy and the burden is light, but when you try to do things under your own power, the opposite will be true.
